Basil Brush took part in the 1000th edition of the Weakest Link over Christmas and managed to get to the final. The winner, Miss Evans, decided to split her winnings so that Basil could give half to his chosen charity, which he announced to be the "Peter Alliss wheelchair fund". Well done Basil - and Miss Evans - and thank you!
Society launches its new Golf Chair Scheme

The Peter Alliss Masters has been active for well over 20 years but only in 2006 did it successfully attain official registration with the Charity Commission. Thoughts are now turning to our plans for further development and our crusade to provide even more powered wheelchairs to those children who so desperately need them. The first of these is to launch our exciting new Golf Chair Scheme. The old scheme worked well but was restricted by the simple fact that it was underpinned by a single sponsor meaning clubs and dealers were limited to supplying the power chairs of just one manufacturer. The new arrangements however are much broader based, the fundamental and important difference being that the chairs of any manufacturer are now included. This will enable dealers to select the ideal chair for any particular child.
It is important that clubs, organisations and, particularly, power chair dealers who have long supported the Peter Alliss Masters, along with those who are thinking of becoming involved, sign up to the new scheme. Full details and all the paperwork necessary are included in the "How to Help" pages.

Following the expansion of the Golf Chair scheme we are now approaching other manufacturers and inviting them also to get involved by sponsoring certain aspects of the event, held in Elie, Scotland, each year and fully described elsewhere on this website. Government passes new Charities Act and changes charity registration thresholds

The new Charities Act, passed in November 2006, will change the income level at which fund-raising charitable bodies must seek registration with the Charities Commission. The new income level will be increased from £1,000 to £5,000. In the past, a number of golf clubs and other supporters of our powered wheelchair crusade have raised funds to purchase chairs and not being registered may strictly speaking have been at odds with the legislation, This increase in the threshold will in some cases now be higher than the level of income they raise and the question of registration will not be an issue. Those who raise more than £5,000 annually should seriously consider seeking registered charity status or seek alternative arrangements.

The committee met on 10th January 2007 and formally approved the design and content of the new website. The site is designed to promote the charity's aims and provide useful information for its members. Organisations participating in the society's fund raising activities and, of course, the annual Peter Alliss Masters Golf Tournament are asked to put links on their own websites back to this website. Information for inclusion in the site's webpages can be sent through to any of the committee or the webmaster, details of whom are in the Contacts section. Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal has recently completed its registration as a charity with the Charity Commission. Although the Appeal has been very successful over the years, this is a further significant and important step forward. HGCPWA raises a substantial amount annually and this registration brings it in line with the requirements of the law. It also adds further credence to its already robust reputation and, perhaps most significantly, enables it to recover income tax on many of the donations received from supporters. Helsby, as far as clubs affiliated to the Peter Alliss Masters Golfing Society (PAMGS) are concerned, becomes the first to be registered as a charity in its own right. However, this in no way affects its relationship with PAMGS charity of which it continues to be a full member. Information on the implications and benefits of obtaining registration, or the possible alternatives, which may be of interest to other clubs and organisations is available in the 'How to help' section of this site.

Invacare, a leading manufacturer of power chairs, has generously agreed to provide some financial support to this year's Peter Alliss Masters golf tournament by becoming one of our valued sponsors. Following the implementation of the new "Golf Chair Scheme" that now enables any manufacturer's chairs to be supplied, a significant number of Invacare chairs have already been donated to children. It is with great pleasure therefore that the charity welcomes them on board and hopes this will be only the beginning of a long term relationship.

Helsby Golf Club's 2007 Black & White (with a hint of red) Evening was another great success. Powered wheelchairs were presented to Rochelle Walsh, Qasin Hussain and Elishia Parks. This takes HGC's total chairs raised up to a staggering 240! The Dinner Dance was also excellent - and the balloon artist was kept busy raing further funds for the charity. We would like to welcome the Wilpshire Golf Club near Blackburn along with a new dealer, Simon Paddock of "The Helpful Hand" in Macclesfield to the Peter Alliss Masters "Wheelchair Crusade". The members of the golf club have generated sufficient funds to buy two chairs which Simon has supplied through the "PAMGS Golf Chair Scheme". Both chairs will be formally presented at the club in a ceremony on 23 December to Darren Moss and Tauheed Ahmed. Of course this means we shall see at least a couple of Wilpshire GC members at Elie in the Autumn.

We are pleased to announce the addition of a new dealer to our panel - Care Plus Mobility - with showrooms in Swindon, Trowbridge, Bath, Bristol, Frome and Weston-Super-Mare. It is good to have on board a dealer in the West Country and it is expected this will encourage even more new clubs to become involved in our charity.

The first year of the Peter Alliss Masters Golf Chair scheme is now complete and has been a resounding success. 13 different golf clubs and organisations bought and donated 67 chairs to a value of £212,000 throught the facility in 2007. The significant benefit that the scheme offers, is that the 8 dealers who participated were able to supply chairs best suited to the children's needs by selecting them from 7 different manufacturers, rather than just the one that the previous arrangement required.

We are delighted to report, therefore, that Alex and his wife have agreed to join us once again, this time to the 2008 tournament - not this time instead of Peter but alongside him. Alex will play in the tournament and furthermore has agreed to speak, certainly at one of the dinners if not both. His presence and undoubted humour will add immeasurably to this years "Masters".

Kirby Muxloe GC in Leicestershire, a long time supporter of the Peter Alliss Masters, will present five chairs this year - three at their Annual AM-AM golf tournament in September and two more at their Christmas Luncheon. This will be a great achievement particularly as the first chair presented at the golf tournament will be their 50th since starting their unstinting support for the "wheelchair crusade".

Andy McColl, a member at Oakdale Golf Club in Harrogate, intends to run the Edinburgh Marathon on 25th May in support of the Peter Alliss Masters. Initially he said he was simply happy to participate as a personal challenge and that his aim was "to run a marathon in less than 4 hours in his fiftieth year". However, he realised that, in so doing, he could probably raise some money for others. He heard about the Peter Alliss Masters Golfing Society from a friend at the golf club and it struck him as being an ideal charity to run for. He says, whilst he still aims to beat 4 hours, the bigger target is now to raise enough money to be able to help someone else in such a tangible way. He is very pro the work of all charities but feels it will be much more satisfying to see the fruits of his efforts in the form of mobilising someone less forunate than himself ? The very idea struck a chord with many of the people he knows; sufficiently so that he is sure they will pledge even more money - enough at least for a powerchair.

Helsby Golf Club celebrated its 25th Anniversary since it began raising funds for the Powered Wheelchair Appeal by presenting 4 more chairs at its Annual Wheelchair Classic event on 5th June 2008. This included its 250th powered wheelchair, a tremendous achievement from what is otherwise a fairly 'normal' local golf club. Peter Alliss and wife Jackie were the special guests at Helsby Golf Club's Sportspersons Evening and, after presenting two more wheelchairs on the club's behalf, he presented the club with a special trophy engraved with a personal message from Peter in thanks for the club's magnificent achievements over the last 25 years.
